**Job Summary**
The Pharmacist Resident PGY1 participates in a structured, postgraduate training program to develop clinical and operational pharmacy skills in a healthcare setting. Under the supervision of preceptors and clinical pharmacy leaders, the resident provides pharmaceutical care, supports medication management initiatives, and engages in interdisciplinary collaboration to improve patient outcomes. The PGY1 resident gains experience in various pharmacy practice areas, including acute care, ambulatory care, and pharmacy operations, while also contributing to quality improvement and research projects.
**Essential Functions**
+ Provides direct patient care by conducting medication therapy management (MTM), reviewing medication regimens, and making evidence-based recommendations.
+ Collaborates with physicians, nurses, and healthcare teams to optimize medication use and improve patient outcomes.
+ Participates in clinical pharmacy rotations across multiple disciplines, including internal medicine, critical care, infectious diseases, ambulatory care, and more.
+ Reviews medication orders for accuracy, safety, and adherence to hospital protocols before dispensing.
+ Supports pharmacokinetic dosing, renal/hepatic dose adjustments, and therapeutic drug monitoring.
+ Assists with medication reconciliation, discharge counseling, and patient education to enhance medication adherence and safety.
+ Engages in pharmacy operations, including sterile and non-sterile compounding, inventory management, and medication distribution.
+ Participates in quality improvement initiatives, formulary management, and medication-use evaluations.
+ Contributes to research, drug utilization reviews, and protocol development to support evidence-based practice.
+ Performs other duties as assigned.
+ Complies with all policies and standards.
**Qualifications**
+ Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) required
+ Eligibility for pharmacist licensure in the state of practice required
+ 0-2 years of previous pharmacy internship, hospital, or clinical pharmacy experience required
**Knowledge, Skills and Abilities**
+ Strong knowledge of pharmacotherapy, disease states, and evidence-based medication management.
+ Ability to analyze patient-specific factors and apply clinical guidelines to optimize medication therapy.
+ Effective communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with interdisciplinary teams.
+ Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills for medication safety and therapeutic decision-making.
+ Proficiency in electronic health records (EHR), pharmacy information systems, and medication order entry.
+ Ability to multitask in a fast-paced clinical and operational pharmacy environment.
+ Commitment to professional development, continuous learning, and research participation.
**Licenses and Certifications**
+ Pharmacist Intern License (if required by state) upon hire required
+ Full Pharmacist Licensure within 90 days of residency start date (as per residency program policy) required
+ BCLS - Basic Life Support required
