Research & Development Technician

Summary:

Supports activities and projects related to the research and development of new and existing products; conducts research and development of recipe testing and product packaging; oversees surveys and sensory testing panels; designated backup in the absence of Quality Assurance Technician

Responsibilities:

Researches product information and tests the best recipe repeatedly to find and determine the best cooking/heating and holding times for productsTracks the exact measurements of each ingredient in order to produce the same profileAdministers surveys and sensory testing to obtain product feedbackConducts sensory testing and taste testing to evaluate productInterprets data and writes detailed reports based on recipe and sensory testing resultsStudies the shelf life of various packaged itemsEvaluates products and packaging materials to determine improvements for product freshnessMaintains research and development product databaseMaintains product formula databaseFollows and adheres to Good Manufacturing Practices, Company protocols and applicable governmental food safety programs and procedures, e.g., SQF, Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and United States Department of Agriculture (USDA)Keeps abreast of quality assurance industry trends and changes in applicable food production laws and regulationsMaintains a clean and orderly research and development test kitchen; ensures equipment is clean and ready for useOperates and monitors proper functioning of equipment; follows safety procedures when operating equipment, and properly sanitizes equipment and work area during and after useWears the applicable personal protective equipment (PPE), e.g., safety glasses/goggles and/or gloves when operating equipmentDemonstrates a high value for health, environment, safety and security issues, initiatives and programs in both personal and organizational responsibilitiesIntegrates health, environment, safety and security into day-to-day job performanceReports food safety and quality problems to direct supervisor immediatelyCoordinates and attends quality assurance and SQF meetings as neededCompletes other duties as assigned by Management

Education/Experience Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in Food Science or minimum 2 years of related experience working in a food laboratory

Skill Requirements:

Excellent communication skills and the ability to read EnglishBasic math skillsDemonstrated knowledge of Word, Excel, and other MS Office suite applicationsExcellent communications skills, both written and verbal, and the ability to research and resolve issuesKnowledge of SQF, FDA, USDA, GMPs, HACCP food regulations and documentation requirementsKnowledge of food product development, processes, food safety and allergensAbility to take direction and follow policies and proceduresAbility to work in a fast-paced environmentPositive, professional attitude and adaptive to changeAbility to work in environment containing allergens (nuts, milk, wheat, etc.)Ability to perform repeated bending, standing, reaching, climbing, twisting/turning, pushing/pulling, squatting/kneeling/stooping, walking and grasping for an extended period of timeAbility to occasionally lift up to 40 pounds

Pay: $21.00 - $29.00 Hourly
